Penfolds is an Australian wine producer, founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold, an English physician who emigrated to Australia. It is one of Australia's oldest wineries.

History

Penfold was a believer in the medicinal benefits of wine and before emigrating to Australia, obtained some vine cuttings from France. Arriving in Australia, he set up in practice at Magill on the eastern outskirts of Adelaide, South Australia and planted vines around his stone cottage which he called The Grange after his wife, Mary's, former home. Initially, Penfold produced fortified wines, for his patients in the style of sherry and port. As demand for the wines increased the winery was expanded.

Mary Penfold assumed the running of the winery after the death of her husband in 1870. After Mary retired in 1884 her daughter Georgina and son-in-law Thomas Hyland took over the day to day running of the winery. The Penfold family continued to operate the business very successfully and although the company became public in 1962 the Penfold family remained in control until 1976.

During the 1940's and 1950's the company changed its focus to table wines to accommodate changing tastes. This led to experiments by Penfolds' chief winemaker, Max Schubert which would eventually lead to the production of Penfolds' and Australia's most famous wine, Grange Hermitage, later renamed simply Grange.

Control of Penfolds passed to Tooth & Co, a brewer based in New South Wales in 1976, to the Adelaide Steamship Co in 1982 and then in 1990 to S.A.Brewing which became part of Southcorp, an Australian conglomerate. Since 2005, the Southcorp wine brands and wineries have been owned by the Foster's Group. Penfolds currently operates two wineries; at Magill, near Adelaide and at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley.

Dominus Californie United States

Dominus is the proprietary red wine produced in the heart of Napa Valley by Christian Moueix and his team. Since 1983, their goal has been to express the unique terroir found at the historic Napanook Vineyard.

Dominus has become known since its first release for its complexity and earthy character, which pay tribute to the Napanook terroir. Christian Moueix truly believes that producing a wine begins in the vineyard. For that reason, each vintage is unique with different varietal blends reflecting the vineyard and climate conditions of that particular year.

Napanook is on the west side of the Napa Valley facing the town of Yountville, approximately one-third of the way up the valley. At the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, it is located between the valley floor and the hillside—we call it the foothills. Historical records show that in 1836 George Yount, who gave his name to Yountville, planted the first vines of the valley on the location of Napanook vineyard, before selling the land in 1850 to Charles Hopper.

Christian Moueix fell in love with the valley and its wines while studying at U.C. Davis in 1968 and 1969. After many years of searching the ideal vineyard location, in 1982 he entered into a joint venture with Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, John Daniel's two daughters.

This was the birth of Dominus, and its first vintage was harvested in 1983. Since then, Christian Moueix has worked to restore the unique character of the original vineyard. He became full owner in 1995.

Gaja Piedmont Italy

The Gaja winery, located in the village of Barbaresco in the Langhe area of the region of Piedmont, in Italy, was founded in 1859.

Angelo Gaja, perhaps the most influential individual in Italian wines over the last 30 years, came from a family of wine makers, but it is probably not true to say that Angelo followed in his father's footsteps. For Angelo Gaja has trodden his own path. Gaja revolutionised the wine business in Barbaresco and beyond. The world now knows the greatness of Barbaresco and Barolo, especially those bottles with his simple, black-and-white label.

Since 1994 Gaja has purchased wine estates in Tuscany; the focus at those vineyards is on international grape varieties, and French vines varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Angelo has never been shy about breaking paradigms.

Having studied in France, Gaja was responsible for the introduction of temperature controlled fermentation, malolactic fermentation and French barrels.

Strikingly profound and fit to live for decades, Gaja's wines display opulence and elegance. When collectors consider Italian wines for their cellar, Gaja is one of the first names they purchase. His wines have a long-established track record, insuring that the wines will perform well when opened, as well as on the auction block.

In 1997, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle, then chairman Vina Concha y Toro, concluded partnership agreement between Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA and Vina Concha y Toro. From these agreements a Franco-Chilean wine was born: Almaviva. The launch of this premium wine was announced on 8 september 1998 at Santiago, Chile, by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and Don Alfonso Larrain, the current chairman of Vino Concha y Toro. Each company owns 50% of Almaviva.

The wine, from one of Chile’s finest vineyards, is produced under the joint technical supervision of both partners.

The name Almaviva comes from the famous play of Beaumarchais: the Marriage of Figaro. Count Almaviva is the hero of the play.

The label, meanwhile, pays homage to Chile’s ancestral history. You can see 3 reproductions of a stylised design which symbolised the vision of the earth and the cosmos in the Mapuche civilisation. The design appeared on the “kultrun”, a ritual drum used by the Mapuche. The label bears the name “Almaviva” in Beaumarchais’ own handwriting. Hand-in-hand, two great traditions thus combine to offer the whole world a promise of pleasure and excellence.

Sales of Almaviva are limited, and directed primarily at markets in Europe, the United States, Asia and Chile.

Almaviva is made from a blend of three classic grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (91%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Carmenere (6%).

This great wine is the result of a encounter between two cultures. Chile offers its soil, its climate and its wines, while France contributes its winemaking skills and traditions.

The 100-acre Almaviva vineyard is situated in Puente Alto, recognised over twenty years ago as offering ideal conditions for growing the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Characteristic features of Puente Alto includes its stony soil, cold, rainy winters, and the hot days and cool nights of its summers.

The entire vinification process is supervised by a French winemaker, on secondment from Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA.

There is no official classification of wines in Chile. However, the launch of Almaviva has given birth to “Primer Orden” quality, a Spanish term which corresponds to the French concept of a classified growth, or “Grand Cru Classé”. In order for the wine to qualify as “Primer Orden”, it must come from a vineyard and bodega devoted solely to the production of that single wine, under the viticultural and oenological supervision of a French producer that owns a “Grand Cru”estate.
